People who meet Uly are amazed at his friendliness. He is an extremely stable dog, built in the old European style; square, sturdy, fearless. His nickname in our Schutzhund club became Arnold because of his beautiful, muscled body. He gets along wonderfully with Tiana and Breu, his son. We have never had a fight between these three who have the run of the house and yard.
Uly is a mouthy individual and will nip at Price to herd him along. He nipped me in the rear one day and I smacked him out of reflex. He rarely, I won't say never, bites me any more. He runs alongside Breu and puts his open mouth on Breu's back or side and Breu does the same to him with no repercussions. He 'mouths' the furniture and I have had to replace so many sheets and blankets, and even the mattress, that he has now been forbidden to get on our bed. One day a man who was installing our satellite system walked into the house without my being at the door. Uly 'mouthed' him, too. He didn't bite but it was clearly a warning. After that the man knocked before he came in the house.
Uly loves Schutzhund. He has worked with some wonderful helpers. He has managed to get in a 'cheap shot' on every one except Les Flores. Armin Winkler got bitten by Uly and laughed. He thinks Uly is one tough, little guy and loves to work him. Uly will jump over, run through, or leap onto anything to get his reward; a good, hard grip on the sleeve.
Uly is a great hunter. The first time he ever raised his leg was to pee on a stick. The only problem was the stick wiggled away. After that no snake was ever safe. I have seen him hunt down, catch, and dispatch decisively, every snake he ever saw. Lizards, bees, flies and moths are all fair game. One day a mouse got into the house. I heard a scabbling sound, a deep bark and a crash. When I looked I saw the great hunter had struck again. The mouse was a goner.
Uly will be bred to Mia in the late Fall of 2005. She is a quiet individual and I am hoping, since we get one of the puppies, that Uly's tendency to bark at anything and everything, will be mitigated in the puppies. I have no doubt the pups will be gorgeous as both parents are outstanding in their conformation and temperament.
